DIY Horizontal Warping Mill
Now available in 2 sizes! 2 yards with each rotation or the table top version for 1 yard with each rotation.
This is the 2 yard version:
I couldn't afford $300 for one of these and couldn't find any plans on the 'net so had to design my own. Space is at a premium so it had to completely fold, too. My husband and I engineered and assembled this one. By removing the cross pegs and one end on each side of the leg supports, the entire thing folds flat and can be hung on a wall or stored under a bed. What's not to love about that?!
I'm often asked how many yards it holds. That's hard to answer. I haven't made a warp, yet, that will max it out. It all depends on the size of the yarn you are using, how many ends you make and how many times you spin it. If you need to make insanely long warps, you can always make it wider. Each rotation yields 2 yards.

NEW IN 2024! MINI TABLE TOP HORIZONTAL WARPING MILL
This is the 1 yard version:
I went through a life situation that meant making some changes. I am currently traveling and living in a motorhome. My original warping mill was just much too big to be used or stored in the RV so, I had to come up with a warping mill that would fit in our coach. I also didn't have several hundred dollars for a pre-made one.
I came up with this. Each rotation yields 1 yard. The plans are easy to modify if you need to build it to suit your needs. Glue it together to make it permanent or completely dismantle to stow away when not in use, it's up to you. Takes up very little space when dismanteled and stored. Mine isn't pretty but it works and that's all I care about.
I'm often asked how many yards it holds. That's difficult to answer. It all depends on the size of the yarn you are using, how many ends you make and how many times you spin it. If you need to make insanely long warps, you can always make it wider. I got a guide thread to go around 10 yards. Comfortably, I'd guesstimate it will accomodate 5 yards. If you need longer warps, simply use longer dowels to make it wider.
I use 2 TV trays to put it on so I can easily sit and make warps.
Here it is dismantled. It easily fits in a bag that I toss into an overhead storage compartment in the RV.

Here's a letter I received from one of my supporters:
"Hello Joyce!
I just thought you might enjoy seeing your plans brought into reality!
Thank you so much for this ingenious design!"

Thank YOU Kristi!
